A chulha is a traditional cookstove and a Hindi work for stove which is commonly used in South Asia, particularly in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. It consists of a mud or brick hearth with a fire pit, where wood, cow dung, or other biomass fuels are burned to provide heat for cooking. Today, three billion people are cooking with biomass fuel on open fires or primitive stoves, and it comes with devastating consequences. WHO estimates, that about four million people die every year prematurely from illnesses stemming from indoor air pollution from inefficient cooking practices.
